Androfeme® Testosterone for Women
Androfeme® is a 1% testosterone cream specifically formulated and licensed for women. Unlike testosterone gels such as Tostran and Testogel, which are licensed for men but sometimes prescribed for women, Androfeme® is designed specifically for female physiology and dosing, making it easier to use and more accurate.

Why Do Women Need Testosterone?
Testosterone is often thought of as a male hormone, but it plays a vital role in women's health. Levels begin to decline from your late twenties contributing to a range of symptoms that are frequently overlooked or misattributed.

Where Can I Get Androfeme® in the UK?
Androfeme® is available on a private prescription only and cannot currently be obtained through a standard NHS prescription in most areas. Women's Wellness Clinic is one of the few private clinics in Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire prescribing Androfeme®, available from our clinics in Cambridge, Bishops Stortford and Ware, with same-week appointments.
What About Tostran and Testogel?
As well as Androfeme®, we can also prescribe male testosterone products, Tostran and Testogel, for women where clinically appropriate. These are licensed for men but can be prescribed off licence for women.
The key difference is that because Tostran and Testogel are made for men, who use higher doses, they can be less straightforward to use. Testogel comes in sachets that need to be split into smaller doses, and Tostran pump dispensers measure 10mg per pump when women typically need 5mg, meaning half a pump is used each day or 1 pump 3 times per week. This can make dosing less consistent than with Androfeme®.
Tostran and Testogel are prescribed on the NHS in some regions, which may make them a more accessible option for some women. Our clinicians can discuss which product is most suitable for you during your consultation.
How Much Does Androfeme® Cost in the UK?
This cost is paid directly to your pharmacy and is separate from the consultation fee. A baseline blood test is required before starting testosterone therapy and is charged separately.
Repeat prescriptions for established patients are available every 3 months for a £40 administration fee.

Androfeme® 1% testosterone cream is applied to the skin, typically the upper outer thigh, abdomen or buttocks, in a small measured dose once daily using the syringe provided. The starting dose for most women is 0.5ml. The testosterone is absorbed through the skin directly into the bloodstream.
Rotating the application site each day helps reduce the risk of localised hair growth. It is best applied to areas with few hair follicles.
The cream comes in a 50g tube, which typically lasts approximately 3 months at the recommended dose.

Getting Started with Testosterone Therapy at Women's Wellness Clinic
Step 1: Initial Consultation
During your initial consultation, available online or in person, our clinician will assess your symptoms, medical history and hormone levels to determine whether testosterone therapy is appropriate for you. If suitable, a private prescription will be issued at the end of your appointment.
Step 2: Baseline Blood Test
A baseline blood test is required before starting testosterone to measure your current levels. We can arrange this at our clinic or advise on how to have it done locally.
Step 3: Begin Treatment
Take your private prescription to any pharmacy, or we can arrange delivery from a specialist pharmacy directly to your door. Your clinician will advise on the correct application site and dose.
Step 4: Follow-Up Blood Test at 3 Months
A follow-up blood test at 3 months ensures your testosterone levels are within the normal female range and allows your clinician to adjust your dose if needed.
Step 5: Annual Monitoring
Once your levels are stable, blood tests are recommended annually, or 3 months after any dose change, to ensure your treatment continues to be safe and effective.

All three contain body-identical testosterone. Androfeme® is specifically formulated and licensed for women, making it easier to use with more accurate dosing. Tostran and Testogel are licensed for men but can be prescribed of licence for women, however dosing can be less consistent as the preparations are designed for higher male doses. We can prescribe all three and will advise on the most suitable option during your consultation.

Some women notice increased hair growth at the application site. This can usually be avoided by rotating the application area and applying to sites with fewer hair follicles such as the upper outer thigh or buttocks. Because the dose is kept within the normal female range, side effects such as facial hair growth or voice changes are uncommon. Your clinician will discuss any potential side effects with you during your consultation.
