PRIVATE COIL FITTING | WOMEN’S WELLNESS CLINIC | IUD & IUS

Private Coil Removal

At Women's Wellness Clinic, we offer fast and gentle private coil removal at our CQC-registered clinic in Cambridge. Whether your coil has reached the end of its lifespan, you are experiencing side effects, or you are planning a pregnancy, our experienced women's health GPs provide same-week appointments with no long waiting lists.

Private Coil Removal: What You Need to Know

Your coil can be removed at any point. Removal is a quick, straightforward procedure and your natural fertility returns to normal immediately afterwards.

If you do not plan to have a new coil fitted but do not wish to become pregnant, we strongly advise using additional contraception, such as condoms for 7 days prior to your removal appointment. This is because sperm can survive in the body for up to 7 days, meaning pregnancy could occur if you have unprotected sex before removal.

Coil Replacement

If your coil is due for replacement, we can remove the existing device and fit a new one in the same appointment. We will discuss the best coil option for you, whether that is an IUD (copper coil) or an IUS (hormonal coil such as Mirena, Kyleena or Jaydess).

Preparing for Your Coil Removal Appointment

  • Nutrition: Have a small meal before your appointment.

  • Pain relief: Consider taking a painkiller that is safe for you approximately one hour before the procedure to help with any discomfort.

  • Contraception: If you do not want to become pregnant, ensure you have alternative contraception in place before your appointment. Fertility returns to normal immediately after removal.

  • Vaginal infection: Please let us know if you have a current vaginal infection ahead of your appointment.

The Removal Process

Coil removal is a quick and straightforward procedure:

  1. You will be asked to lie down comfortably.

  2. The clinician will gently locate the coil threads at the cervix.

  3. The coil is removed by carefully pulling the threads, this typically takes only a few minutes.

  4. Anaesthetic gel is available and extra pain relief can be provided if needed.

Most women experience only mild cramping during and shortly after removal, similar to period pain.

Aftercare Following Coil Removal

  • Cramping: It is normal to experience some mild cramping after removal. Over-the-counter pain relief such as ibuprofen or paracetamol can help.

  • Fertility: Your natural fertility returns to normal immediately after removal. If you do not wish to become pregnant, ensure you have alternative contraception in place before your appointment.

  • Follow-up: We do not routinely require a follow-up appointment after coil removal, but we are always happy to see you if you have any concerns.
